Continuous penetration tests are performed by driving a 2 inch outside diameter. blunt nosed penetrometer, sometimes called a "Bull Nose," through the bottom of the test boring, or next to it.
The penetrometer is attached to 1 5/8 inch rods to provide clearance from the sides of the boring. Penetration values are recorded as the number of blows a 140 pound hammer, with a 30 inch drop required to advance the penetrometer one foot.
Alternatively, Cone Penetration Testing may be used to determine the point capacity of the cone tip, and skin fraction measured on the cone sleeve.
