Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans

Federal regulations require any construction site greater than five acres, and smaller construction sites that are part of larger development plans, utilize a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) to control storm water runoff at the construction site. The SWPPP is designed to mitigate possible sources of water pollution through Best Management Practices (BMP's).

Key SWPPP Components

  • Best Management Practices
  • Dust Control Permits
  • Earth Moving Permits
  • Spill Prevention Plans
  • Waste Disposal Plans
  • Material Storage Plans
  • Equipment Maintenance Plans
  • Notices of Intent (NOI)
  • Notices of Termination (NOT)

Minimum SWPPP Design Goals

  • Meet state and local standards for grading and drainage.
  • Minimize the volume of upstream flow crossing the disturbed area.
  • Minimize the length of time the disturbed area is without cover.
  • Eliminate non-storm water discharges.
  • Avoid release of sediment-laden water.
  • Release water in a manner that avoids contact with potential pollutants and minimizes downstream erosion.
